Broadway Spectacular

GREASE is shaking up Sydney this March.

An All-Australian cast is lined up to play iconic characters in the beloved Broadway musical. GREASE will first hit Melbourne stages in January, before moving to Capitol Theatre in Sydney from March.

‘I am thrilled that GREASE, one of the world’s all-time favourite musicals, is returning to Australia in a brand-new production featuring an all-Australian creative team,’ says Producer John Frost. ‘I know that this will be the party musical that everyone is talking about for a long time to come.’

Sydney’s own Annelise Hall is playing the coveted role of Sandy, popularised in the movie-musical by the late and great Olivia Newton-John. Annelise grew up locally in St Ives, before studying at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, a music school in Brisbane.

Olivia Newton-John may have left big shoes to fill with the role of Sandy, though this is no deterrence for Annelise. During her time at university, Annelise had played Sandy in a collaboration between Griffith University and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

‘Everyone knows and loves the role so much… Olivia made Sandy Australia’s sweetheart,’ says Annelise, explaining how she feels a connection to the character, and sees both herself and her mother in Sandy. ‘I’ve got so much to draw on, and I will be able to bring my own self to the role.’

Alongside Annelise as Sandy, Melbourne’s Joseph Spanti will play Danny Zuko, Keanu Gonzalez will play Kenickie, Lucy Fraser is Patty Simcox, Gareth Issac is Eugene, Catty Hamilton and Caitlin Spears will play the Pink Ladies, and Harry Targett and Tom Davis will be the T-Birds. GREASE is full of iconic numbers, including Summer Nights, You’re the One That I Want, and Greased Lightnin’, all set to be performed in the upcoming stage production.

‘GREASE is such a fun-party musical, no one feels the need to take themselves too seriously, we’re just here to have a good time,’ says Annelise Hall, praising the chemistry between the crew. ‘We’re here to make something special so that we can provide that fun entertainment.’
