St Ives Show turns 100
1 min read

The St Ives Agricultural Show celebrates its centenary on the weekend of May 15 and 16.

The show started in 1921. It ceased during World War II when the showground was used by the defence force as the 18th Battalion, but re-opened after the war ended.

Back in the day the show was huge. The then caretaker’s son can remember Jimmy Sharrman’s boxing tent near the old bar building (which is still standing today) with crowds 15-20 deep buying alcohol, including a pavilion full of chickens.

Ku-ring-gai Council was interested in restarting the show and called a public meeting. A committee was formed and Douglas Pickering became President.

The new President had many events in mind – cooking, horticulture, woodchopping, dancing, BMX, Mini Bike Club, Robinson Family Circus, animal nursery, a large amusement area, fireworks show, and more.

The show appeals to a wide audience with lots of fun events, including horse and dog events, musical performances, sideshows, rides and, of course, the
ever-popular showbags.
