Stroke Survivor Priya Sharma Wins 2023 Stroke Awards

WEST Pennant Hills Stroke Survivor Priya Sharma has won the Stroke Foundation’s Improving Life After Stroke Award for 2023.

The Improving Life After Stroke Award recognises those who devote their time to caring and supporting Australian stroke survivors.

Priya suffered a stroke eight years ago, at the age of 24. Priya, with immense dedication, relearned to walk and talk after surviving her stroke. Since, Priya has become an advocate for stroke awareness, becoming an ambassador for the Stroke Foundation, and educating others through her social media on the reality of young people suffering strokes.

The Stroke Foundation’s 2023 Stroke Awards were held in Melbourne of the 4th of May. The winners were chosen for their inspirational impact on the lives of stroke survivors, their families, the carers, and the medical professionals.

‘The Stroke Awards shine a light on the amazing people in our community who are making life better for survivors of stroke, and reducing the burden of stroke in our community,’ said Dr Lisa Murphy, Chief Executive Officer for the Stroke Foundation.

The Improving Life After Stroke Award was presented to Priya Sharma for her remarkable achievements. The award was sponsored by Australian Physiotherapy Association, the national organisation that represents Australian physiotherapists and their patients.

‘It was quite exciting. I was happy, my achievements are being recognised at that level,’ says Priya, speaking about her joy receiving a Stroke Award after being a five-time finalist.

Priya has recently co-authored a book featuring the stories of 26 young stroke survivors. Finding Yourself After Stroke by Letisha Living outlines the courage and resilience of young stroke sufferers as they experience their stroke, are diagnosed, endure rehabilitation, and manage life post-stroke.

Priya states that she will continue to spread stroke awareness even after receiving the Stroke Foundation’s Improving Life After Stroke Award.
