Thrive not just Survive - Ageing Successfully
1 min read

AGEING successfully wasn't something I thought about until I heard Professor Susan Kurrle talk about how important it is to age successfully.

In simple terms ageing successfully is living your best life, so you can go on living your best life.

When I first started looking at how to age successfully, I was overwhelmed - there were so many areas in which I could do better and as a carer, where was I going to find the time and how was I going to get my aged loved one involved?

I decided to chunk it into a few important areas:

  • Reducing illness
  • Increasing movement
  • Being included
  • Engagement
  • Increasing stimulation

These are the areas that are important to me however, you may have different priorities.

Reducing illness started with getting a checkup and seeing what areas needed some attention and then working to improve those areas.

Increasing movement, I decided to do a few different activities a few times a day.  5 leg raises 4 times a day or 3 x 15-minute walks etc.

Being included, was about doing things with family and friends - as simple as this sounds, in our busy lives it really is important to do things together.

Engagement, I found things I wanted to do including joining a group for a regular catch up.

Increase stimulation, I played a few brain games on my phone

I know it may be difficult to find some time each and every day, but it really is important to take care of yourself especially when you are caring for others.  You are worth it!

Include your aged loved one in your ageing successfully activities it really will improve your and their day!
