Ku-ring-gai Council Joins the Sunflower Program
1 min read

THE Sunflower Program is an innovative project aimed at raising awareness and providing support for people with hidden disabilities and chronic health conditions.

Some examples of hidden disabilities include autism, anxiety, dementia, epilepsy and hearing loss.

Chronic health conditions can include arthritis, diabetes, chronic pain, severe allergies and sleep disorders.

The Council recently became a member of the Sunflower Program, meaning that its staff are being trained to assist children and adults with hidden disabilities or chronic health conditions.

The program works through free lanyards or bracelets showing the sunflower symbol, which residents simply wear to show Council staff that they need extra support, understanding or time.

The sunflower lanyards and bracelets are available at several locations across the area including the Council’s customer service centre, Level 4 818 Pacific Highway Gordon, all Ku-ring-gai Libraries, a full list is available on the Council website.

Mayor Jeff Pettett said staff in these locations were being trained to recognise the lanyards and bracelets and provide support to people as required.

“Residents with a hidden disability or health condition can now be confident our frontline staff will be empathetic and considerate if they need extra help,” he said.
