New look North Sydney Pool, plus a look back in time
2 min read

THE harbourside, red-brick arches, decorated with its art deco moulded figures of aquatic motifs, are one of only three architectural features that will remain at the iconic North Sydney Olympic Pool.

Since its budgeted $63.9 million dollar renovation began in 2021, the historic location has had its internals bulldozed, concrete slabs poured, footings completed, drainage tested, and steel work constructed. Work will soon begin on the new state of the art fitness and leisure centre. The major project is estimated to be completed by July 2023.

North Sydney Council have revealed that highlights of the project will include upgrading the existing 50m and 25m pools, creating a kids waterplay area with splash pad and water spraying feature, warm water pool for exercise, expanded gym, larger creche with private indoor and outdoor areas, new 970 person grandstand with a permanent shade, and ramp access to both pools and changing facilities. Along with the 1930s arches, the sundeck and heritage stair tower will also remain, keeping some of its long-standing heritage intact.

Originally opening its doors after the Great Depression, in 1936, the pool has recorded thirty-eight world records from such Australian swimming greats as Jon Konrads and Ilsa Konrads, Lorraine Crapp, Frank O'Neill, Judy Joy Davies, John Devitt, Shane Gould and Michelle Ford. During 1938, the Empire Games (which would develop into the Commonwealth Games) took place here for both the swimming and diving events, where Australia won seven golds, three silvers, and a six bronzes.

“The attraction to here by tourists is extraordinary. It's probably the most beautiful pool and setting in the world. I try and swim between 5 and 7 times a week. Swimming is very good for one's mental health. I can swim up and down what other people may say is really boring, but I can solve all my day's problems, all in the time I am breathing up and down in lane 6, primarily,” says Melinda, a swimmer at the pool since the 70s (‘Melinda Berliner - North Sydney Olympic Pool’, YouTube video, Posted by North Sydney Council, 22 May 2019).

Up until renovations began last year, it had become a must see tourist destination due to its close proximity to the harbour with its picturesque Insta-worthy views, as well as a place for locals to keep healthy and active. But its history with medal-winning Olympians still remains, and once it reopens, it will continue to breed Australian champions.
